CSA Farmer Profile: Live Power Community Farm

Live Power Community Farm
Covelo, CA
http://www.livepower.org/

Involved Consumers. Dedicated Farmers.

Live Power is an organic, biodynamic, diversified, farm that is powered by photovoltaics and draft horses. On this busy farm, the resounding theme is one of balance between practicality and spirituality. “The farm is a vast and constant interchange; a realm of sharing, giving, and serving. As farmers we become conscious participants in this exchange.” Stephen and Gloria Decater have been farming in the Round Valley region of Mendocino County, just outside of Covelo, since 1973.

Since 1988 Live Power has served a community of members/co-producers, making it one of the first CSAs in the United States. The program continues to thrive, currently feeding over 200 families from the Bay Area and Mendocino. The seasonal farm shares span May-November, and come in bushel or half-bushel quantities. In true “community farm” spirit, members are invited to help unload the CSA deliveries and organize the shares. Member involvement is important to the Decaters, stating “We believe that a community-based (rather than market-based) farm has the greatest potential to create a new, more conscious awareness of our food/economic system and is the key to the future.”

Local 6th – 10th grade students attend school visits to the farm, where they are taught hands-on skills and invited to connect with their food system. David Martinez reminisces about his experiences visiting Live Power as a child, “The warm care of the earth combined with a vibrant practicality makes the Live Power experience a rare and valuable gift that I hold close.”

Those hard to fold, but oh-so sturdy, cardboard CSA boxes are quickly replacing the pink, grease spotted, doughnut boxes in office break rooms all over the nation.

It's not just hospitals with nutrition programs for their employees or yoga studios and gyms that are hosting CSA drop sites...

A shelving unit company out of Wisconsin recently partnered with a local farm to receive CSA deliveries at the office. As Civil Eats writer, Lori Rotenberk, points out "a food culture blossoms when workers have a reason to talk about recipes or trade produce." Read the full article from Civil Eats here:

It might not be long before the office gossip is flooded with zucchini recipes.

"CSAs were once for country granola people, Whole Foods types, an elite niche. But by going into the workplace we are able to reach more mainstream people who eat processed food, go to McDonald's, and may not have thought about healthy diets", says Julie Garrett, of Madison's FairShare Coalition.
